Abby is a cute little pit mix that really believes she runs the house when Dad goes to work. Her owners called us after being severely bitten on her right arm. The bite was so bad that months after the bite she was still unable to properly use her arm and hand.
Needless to say an incident like this caused a great deal of apprehension in her and she had become afraid of Abby for fear of another bite.
Not only had Abby bitten her Mom (Terri), but had attacked her Dad (Gary). The difference being that he put her in her place and the attacks on him stopped - go figure, right?
We started the session by finding out the circumstances of her attacks and what could trigger her. After a short time, it was all too clear.
Abby is a good girl, but lacking in direction while Gary was at work. So much that Abby became protective of Terri to the point that when Terri would try to correct her, she would turn on Terri and return the gesture with her teeth.
This wasn't the first time Abby had bitten her, so as the fear escalated, the pooch was empowered. Our job waws to return the status quo in the home and put Abby back in her place.
Once again the word "Structure" is used and we had to work on empowering Terri to believe in herself and get rid of the fear so she could become more and more in control.
We started with the walk and worked our way back into the home. It was a lot of information for the couple, but it was worth it when we returned to see how the days lessons had been enforced.
I was happy to see that things had improved within a short time and both Terri and Gary had worked together to maintain control of Abby. Abby was more content and although there was still a little apprehension there on Terri's part she had become much more confident in her abilities.
A week later she emailed us and told us she had put the collar on her for the first time since the bite. Originally she was too scared to do that. We're very proud of you all, you've done a wonderful job :)
