Fredy & Buddy

Buddy

I received a call from Fredy about his Lab, 'Buddy'. Buddy has a problem with other dogs and will bark and lunge at them while walking. There are two pugs in this pack as well, but needless to say Buddy is the most boisterous of the trio. Fredy and his wife were getting frustrated with this behavior and asked that I help them with this problem.

Some of these situations are more serious than others and issues like this should never be taken lightly. Buddy is a large dog and if someone were to lose control of him while having an aggressive episode it could definitely end with trouble. I'm sure no one wants to see a dog get hurt, but this dog is powerful enough to drag a person and possibly put them in harms way also. My task was to get Buddy to face this issue with a calm and relaxed demeanor as opposed to the violent reaction he is used to displaying.

As you can see in the picture to the right, both Buddy and the Husky are in a relatively calm state after subduing a tense situation. I would have Buddy face his so-called opponent and do so in a calm manner. Fredy had told me of several issues he has while walking Buddy and how he would cross the street to avoid confrontation. It was Fredy who was adding fuel to the fire by sending out his anxiety to Buddy who responded with jumping and barking. By the time we had finished our walk Fredy commented how it was like night and day and how pleased he was by still having his arm in its socket at the end of the walk. It didn't finish there though......

I was determined to show Fredy that we could introduce his canine friend to other dogs without having the problems. We took him to a dog park. I walked Buddy into the park and at first he was tentative, but by the time I had walked him to the center of the park I was confident that he wouldn't let me down. I released him to the surprise of Fredy and Buddy ran off to make new friends. I was very proud of Buddy and by the time we got him back home, he drank some water and sat in the kitchen, relaxed, happy and without creating a fuss. Fredy and his wife were thrilled and I will be returning to check on their progress in a week or so.

"Thanks James for the wonderful lesson in life I learned from your hands on instructions and guidance. Training me and Buddy makes me feel confident to own a big adorable dog, it makes me a better person and thought me how to understand and love such a nice pet." - Fredy, Panorama City, CA
