The Dog previously known as ..... ???
Tai

Sometimes when I go to a clients home I prefer to rely on my instincts as opposed to knowing too much, but this puppy has a wonderful story and was adopted by a wonderful family.

This puppy's name was originally "Chrystal" but her owner wanted to change her name to Tai to represent where she came from - Taiwan. This poor little girl was rescued in Taiwan, brought to the US and adopted by a loving family with two small children.

The pet parents wanted us to evaluate the dog to see if the temperament would be conducive to their lifestyle and whether it is a good choice for the sake of the children. She is an absolute doll and all puppy, but her problem was that she would wrap her teeth around the limbs of her owner and bite .... not hard enough to seriously injure, but to play even though it hurt.

She was used to getting her own way in a very short space of time. The children are afraid of her because she is mouthy. Her teeth are sharp .... she is teething. Teeth are breaking through and that hurts dogs just like any child. I always say "Don't humanize your dog" but this is as close as you can get to understanding this behavior. Expect it, it's normal.

I don't care how old your dog is, how cute he/she is, how good they are most of the time, you have to exercise a tremendous amount of discipline before affection and do it from day one.

My personal belief, which is confirmed by many others, is to show structure and discipline from the start just like the pack mother would do.

What struck me the most as the day went on, was not anything to do with the mouthy nature, but the fact that I learned the dog was incredibly fearful of SUV's !!!

I find mouthy behavior normal and something you correct with timing and precision. But I felt that her fear of getting in a truck or being by one very disturbing.

With the help of the pet parents, we got her to not only understand that biting is unacceptable, but there was no danger with being in the truck. Funny enough, she didn't want to get out of the truck once we got her in there by her own accord. We will be returning to see Tai in a couple of weeks to follow up on her, but I know that our day with her was a good one. She has a great family and a wonderful future .... We'll update shortly
